Bridesmaids’ Shoes

Find the perfect pair for your pals

Seeing as Flair is a dress shop, we tend to focus on, well, dresses of course! Even we know, though, that much more goes into a wedding day look than just the dress. From hair and makeup to accessories, it’s these other details that really finalize your look and add a quick pop of personality. One of our favorite details? Shoes! Let’s face it, most of us ladies can happily shoe shop for hours, never tiring and never getting bored. Shoe shopping for a wedding, though, can come with a little more pressure than your average day at the shops. When it comes to bridesmaids’ shoes, there are a few things you brides should consider before you let your girls loose at the mall:

At Flair, most of the shoes that we keep in store for girls to try on are by Nina Shoes. They're super comfortable, affordable, and have tons of heel height, style and color variety!

Uniformity – You probably made a similar decision when it came to your girls’ dresses – to match or not to match? If you really like that clean, matching look, then really the shoe shopping is up to you, not your girls. Find a style you like and give them their marching/shopping orders. If you’re less concerned about them looking the same, consider just telling them a color you prefer and letting them do their own thing!
Style – Even if you’re OK with your girls’ shoes being different, you may still want to consider giving them a little guidance when it comes to their overall shoe vibe. If you say “buy anything you like in black” you risk the chance of getting a wide range of styles. Imagine a glorified flip flop next to a black sparkly pump. Doesn’t really work, right? To avoid that, think about guiding them in the right direction by showing them a few pairs you like, or using descriptive words like “formal sandals” or “patent pumps”; whatever you like!
Height – Some brides hate a kitten heel, while others would die if one of their bridesmaids showed up in a 6 inch heel. Think about where you fall on that spectrum and be honest with your girls before you send them out to shop. If you opted for floor length bridesmaids’ dresses, height is even more important. Have each girl try her dress on with a few pairs she already owns to determine what heel height allows for her dress to just hit the floor. The last thing you want is for a girl’s dress to be that tacky few inches off of the ground!

Tell us – what shoes do you want your girls to wear??

Maternity Bridesmaids’ Dresses

Bridesmaid + Bump = Beautiful!

I went to a fabulous baby shower over the weekend – it was everything you’d want in a shower. There was delicious food, gorgeous flowers, great conversation, and not a single gift was opened – yay! C’mon admit it, we’re all thrilled to miss that part, right? In addition, the mommy to be’s outfit was to die for. A chic three quarter floral length coat over a classic fitted dress that showed off her adorable bump; perfection! She made it look easy, but I know that dressing a pregnant body can be difficult. It seems that these days there is a pregnant bridesmaid in almost every bridal party! If you’re one, here’s what you need to know:
1) Be prepared to tailor – Even though we have a wealth of experience dressing and fitting pregnant bridesmaids, every woman is different and it’s always a bit of a guessing game. The hard truth is that we really have no idea what size you’ll be on the wedding day. So, our recommendation is always to order several sizes larger than your size at the time of order. After all, you can always take your dress in, but there’s less you can do about a dress that comes in too small!
2) The dress style that you can get is somewhat determined by how far along you’ll be at the wedding – The general rule of thumb is that if you will be 5 months or less, you can probably order a “regular” bridesmaid’s dress in a larger size. More than five months typically requires a maternity style. If you fall in the 5 months or less category, though, you’ll still want to choose a style that will accommodate your growing bump. Depending on the bride’s requirements, try to choose a flowy fabric over a stiffer one, and a fuller skirt over a fitted one.

3) If you are due before the wedding – Ordering while pregnant when you know you’ll no longer be so on the big day is just as difficult. Don’t stress yourself by ordering the size you were before you got pregnant. At the very least, your bust will likely be larger than “normal” if you’ll be breastfeeding. Again, we recommend ordering large; you can always tailor it down if need be!

You don't have to sacrifice style when you wear a maternity dress. Dessy style M428 has a top trend - lovely lace!

4) If you’re trying to conceive – The theme continues; order large and alter if needed! If you and your spouse are planning for a family, it can’t hurt to order a couple of sizes larger than your typical size to allow for a small bump. If you want to keep it hush hush, feel free to call us after your appointment to discuss. We can keep a secret 😉

Bottom line, ordering a maternity bridesmaid’s dress is no easy task, but we’re here to help! Give us a ring – we’re happy to talk you through it no matter where you’re at in the baby process!

Bridesmaids’ Dress Shopping

The long and short of it

Wedding planning requires that you make a ton of choices (cue all brides saying: duh!). A band or a DJ? A buffet or a seated dinner? Write your own vows or use the traditional? There’s so much to consider, but luckily there’s really no wrong answer. Whatever you and your fiancé like is the right choice! When it comes to bridesmaids’ dresses, one of the first decisions you have to make is long versus short. If you’re in the middle of this “lengthy” debate, here are some things to consider:
Formality – In the past, the thinking seemed to be formal venue = long dresses. That’s not necessarily true. It’s more a question of the vibe you’d like to achieve for your big day. If you’re asking your guests to wear black tie, for example, then yes, long bridesmaids’ dresses are a must. If the men are wearing tuxes – long again. Basically, if you’re going for a super formal, black tie type of wedding, floor length dresses are your best bet. Other wedding styles tend to have more flexibility.

Weather – Having a July wedding? Do your girls a favor and highly consider short dresses. If you’re having a black tie, indoors (aka with AC) affair, though, you can still think about long. Vice versa for winter; make sure your girls aren’t shivering down the aisle and put them in long. Having a Spring/Fall wedding where anything can happen weather-wise? Then just choose what you like and cross your fingers!
“You’ll wear it again.” – Ahh, the classic bridesmaids’ conundrum. If having your girls more easily re-wear their dresses is a top priority to you, then you may want to lean towards short styles. Let’s face it; most of us have far more casual events on our social calendars then formal. Therefore, they’re probably more likely to have the opportunity to wear a shorter, more casual dress again.
Religious ceremony – Having a religious ceremony doesn’t necessarily negate one or the other length. It’s more a reminder that if you do opt for short, make sure your girls don’t hem them so much that they become inappropriate in your given place of worship. When in doubt, long is never a bad choice for a more traditional, religious ceremony.

Most of all, though, always remember what we said up top. There’s really no right or wrong when it comes to weddings. It’s the biggest day of your life, so above all else just choose what you like! Happy shopping, brides and ‘maids 🙂

Bridesmaids’ Etiquette

Do’s and Don’ts to ensure you’re an A+ bridesmaid!

Anyone who has planned a wedding can tell you that there are a ton of do’s and don’ts for the engaged couple. Even though the wedding is all about them, that doesn’t mean the rest of us are rule free. There’s etiquette for the guests, parents, vendors; the list goes on and on! Today, we’re going to focus on the other ladies up at the altar, though; the bridal party! If you’re a bridesmaid in an upcoming wedding, here are some guidelines that you should keep in mind:
Do: Listen to the bride talk about her wedding – When you break it down, really the only bridesmaid’s duty that matters is to provide moral support to the bride. That’s why you’re there! So, even if it may seem like she can go on, and on and on, it’s your job to listen. If you feel like it’s getting to be a bit much, though, there are nice ways that you can limit her talk time. Suggest that you schedule a weekly chat session, for example, at the same day/time every week. That way you can focus 100% on her at that time, and avoid sneak attack calls when you’re busy and not ready/expecting them.
Don’t: Involve the bride in any bridesmaids’ drama. It’s inevitable; no matter how tight your group is, there will be atleast one or two small “problems” during the planning process. Even if you and the bride typically tell each other everything, this is the time to bite your tongue. She probably has a million other things to worry about, so keep this one to yourself. Unless you foresee this issue truly affecting her big day, she really doesn’t need to know.

Do: Look how she wants you to look. When you agree to be in the bridal party you’re also agreeing to give up control of your style, atleast for a day. That means you have to rock the dress she likes, the jewelry she chooses, and the hair/makeup she prefers. That’s right; even if you don’t like it. Now, if she says “Do what you want!” then go for it! Otherwise, wait for her cues and don’t make a fuss.
Don’t: Get drunk. There are a ton of fun events during the wedding planning process, but as a bridesmaid it’s your job to ensure that the bride and other guests have a good time. Unfortunately, your good time comes second. That’s not to say that you have to be stone cold sober, but you can’t get so tipsy that you forget to write down gifts at the shower or get everyone into the taxis and to dinner on time at the bachelorette. Basically, use your best judgment!

Bridesmaids’ Dress Shopping Tips

Set yourself up for dress success!

Planning; when it comes to your wedding, there’s very little you can do without it. From the all important budget planning, to the seating chart, to your ceremony structure and more– advanced preparation is key. The same goes for your bridesmaids’ dress shopping! In order to get the most out of your appointments, prior planning is of the utmost importance. That hour in the store goes by in a snap, so getting organized in advance will help you maximize your time and set you up for success! Since we know a thing or two about bridesmaids’ dress shopping 😉 we decided to pull together a brief list of recommendations for what to do before you visit us:
1) Buy your bridal gown – The wedding dress sets the tone for all of the other attire, so check that off of your list first! Another reason to wait? Designers come out with new dresses 1-2 times per year and you want to make sure you see all that will be available for your wedding season. We recommend shopping 5-6 months in advance of the big day.

2) Do your research – There are so many options available these days that it’s best to come in with an idea in mind to help us tailor down your search/selection. Check out real weddings (our Facebook page is a great place to start!) as well as styled shoots in magazines/ blogs. Use those as inspiration to help you head into your appointment with atleast one thing you must have in your bridesmaids’ dresses. You’d be surprised how much that one thing can help narrow down the sea of dresses and make your shopping trip successful and stress free!

3) Choose your dream team – Your bridesmaids’ dress appointments are not an excuse for a small party. More people = more voices, more opinions and more anxiety! Take some time prior to your shopping trips to decide whose opinion matters most and who you think will really help you choose the right dresses. Bring only those people to your initial appointment; you can always bring more people to any follow up appointments…after you’ve narrowed down the choices!

We could go on and on, but if you do those three, main things in advance of your bridesmaids’ shopping, we’re sure that you’ll find your appointment to be trouble-free and triumphant! Tell us if you have any tips for our future Flair brides/maids to add to the list 🙂

Will You Be My Bridesmaid?

Ask your girls in a fun, new way!

Here are Flair, we love hearing about how you got engaged! Brides always glow as they recount the way their fiancé popped the question. Hearing these stories got us to thinking; as nice as it is to be proposed to, we bet it’s just as fun to do the proposing! To get brides in on the act, there’s a new trend in the wedding world – bridesmaids’ proposals! While a handwritten note is always a classic, heartfelt option, if you want to do something a little unique and over the top for your girls, consider popping the bridal party question! Here are just a few ideas that we love:

1) A polished proposal – Start by asking your future bridesmaid to go for a mani/pedi. Every girl knows that one of the best parts of going to the nail salon is choosing your color and reading all of the fun polish names. When it comes time to choose, hand her a custom polish with a name that pops the question! Pretty Please is a super cute company that can help you accomplish this proposal with style!

2) Pop the cork…and the question – Start by ordering one of these adorable, custom wine glasses. Then, ask your future maid to meet you at a local vineyard for a day of wine tasting (we bet it won’t be hard to get her there). Arrive first and ask the staff to give your girl the special glass when it’s time to taste. It’s sure to be a vineyard visit you and she won’t forget. Cheers!

3) A shipment to make her smile – If your future maid isn’t local, you can always get creative and ship your proposal! The options are endless, but we kinda love these custom fortune cookies. Fill them with quotes you both love, memories you share, and finally, with one popping the question!

Whatever you do, taking the extra step to “propose” to your bridesmaids is sure to make them feel special and get them excited to stand by your side on the big day!

Making your Bridesmaids Feel Special

Be the Beyonce of Brides (aka the best)!

When you get to a certain age, it seems like your whole life rotates around weddings. When’s that shower? Where’s that bachelorette? We have HOW many weddings this year?! Not to mention when you’re a bridesmaid in one (or more) of those weddings. After the first one or two times being in a bridal party, the shine can wear off a little. So, when you get engaged, remember that while it’s your first time as a bride, it’s probably not your friends’ first time being a maid. Make your wedding stand out (and earn yourself an A+ bride rating!) by doing some special things for your girls throughout the process:

1) Ask them in style – The first interaction your bridesmaids will have with you as a bride is when you ask them to be in the wedding party, so do it right! You don’t have to go crazy (a Bridesmaids style invite complete with live butterfly is not necessary); a simple, chic, personalized card is a timeless approach that is sure to have them saying “yes!”

These ADORABLE cards (by fab local artist Holly Nichols) are available on our online site, Frills, and can be customized with different names/shoe colors!

2) Plan a get together – Kick your wedding planning off with a bang by organizing a fun event for your girls! This is especially important if your bridesmaids don’t all know each other; it’s your job to facilitate the getting acquainted process. Take a cocktail making class, plan an outing at a local vineyard, indulge in a spa day…the list of possibilities goes on and on! It will be fun for everyone and it’ll show your girls that you care, which will get them excited to help you plan for the main event!

3) Take their opinions into account – This is a good idea across the board, but especially with their look. Think about creating a special “bridesmaids’ style” Pinterest board and give them access to add to it. Then, use their ideas as a jumping off point for your dress shopping trip. They will respect that you have taken their preferences to heart and will end up looking and feeling better for it!

Worried they'll have differing opinions? Jenny Yoo shows that it's OK (even beautiful!) to mix and match dresses and colors!

4) Give them a shout out – The rehearsal dinner is the perfect time to make your love for your bridesmaids’ known. Most of the important people in your life will be there, so calling them out specifically is sure to bring a tear to their eye and earn you major bride points (and make up for that inevitable bridezilla moment that every bride has).

5) Be the wedding morning maven – By the day of the wedding, your bridesmaids will have done a ton to help you, so it’s time to let them know how much you appreciate all of their hard work! Order room service, bring in their favorite coffee, pop some champagne and create a fun, stress free getting ready environment full of gratitude!

6) Take your photos over the top – If you have time, talk to your photographer about doing special portraits with each of your bridesmaids. Also offer to have their significant others involved. If they can walk away from your wedding with a professional photo with you and their hunny (maybe even their families!) they are sure to remember you as the bride to beat!

Whatever you do, always remember that your bridesmaids’ whole lives are not dedicated to your wedding. Stay involved in what’s going on in their lives too and make time for non-wedding talk. Trust us, you’ll probably want to get your mind off the big day every once and awhile too 🙂

Bridesmaids’ Dresses

Caring for your wedding wardrobe

As we unpacked box after box of shiny, new bridesmaids’ dresses this week, we got to thinking about what happens to these beauties after they leave our showroom. We LOVE getting photos from our brides’ big days; seeing the dresses come to life and fit in with all of your other gorgeous wedding details. But what about before the wedding day? We realized that maybe it was time for a little crash course in “I just received my bridesmaid’s dress, now what??”

Just a small sampling of the dresses we unpack on a daily basis. Side bar, this is going to be one beautiful, blush bridal party!

Just a small sampling of the dresses we unpack on a daily basis. Side bar, this is going to be one beautiful, blush bridal party!

So you pick up your dress, you’re all excited, and then you get it home and kinda freak out a little. This is a super important dress and you have to keep it safe and in perfect condition until the wedding day (which for some people is months away). Don’t panic, here’s what you do:

1) Try it on…ASAP! – We’re going to start off by saying that 99.9% of the time our dresses leave the store in perfect condition. However, there is that other 0.1% to consider. If you get your dress home and you think something isn’t quite right, we have to know about it right away. Most likely, it’s not an actual problem and we can talk you through it. In the event that there is a true issue, though, our designers will only consider fixing a dress if they know about the problem quickly. The longer it’s in your care, the more likely the problem occurred on your end, and the less likely they will be to remedy it.

2) Find your dress a home – Once you’ve tried your dress on and are happy with it, it needs a place to live. Find a nice, dark place (like the back of your closet) to keep it safe. Avoid anywhere that gets direct sunlight, as prolonged sun exposure overtime can affect the color slightly. Also, make sure the dress isn’t smashed/crushed; giving it ample space will avoid wrinkling. Last but not least, always keep your dress in the bag we provided it with!

3) Plan your tailoring – Most dresses will need some adjustments, so use this time to research where you want to take yours. Of course, Flair has a preferred, amazing tailor, but ultimately you can take your dress wherever you like. We strongly recommend choosing a reputable tailor with great reviews (ideally someone you know has used/loved them). Remember, the cheapest option is likely not the best option. This is not the place to cut corners!

4) Let out some steam – While many tailors will offer to steam your dress for you, it is likely to get a few wrinkles between pick up and the wedding day. See if the venue where you will be getting ready has a steamer on hand for last minute adjustments. If not, most dresses can be steamed in the bathroom during a nice, long, hot shower. Just avoid actual water contact with your dress; keep it far enough from the stream to just get a nice, little steam.
