Making your Bridesmaids Feel Special

Be the Beyonce of Brides (aka the best)!

When you get to a certain age, it seems like your whole life rotates around weddings. When’s that shower? Where’s that bachelorette? We have HOW many weddings this year?! Not to mention when you’re a bridesmaid in one (or more) of those weddings. After the first one or two times being in a bridal party, the shine can wear off a little. So, when you get engaged, remember that while it’s your first time as a bride, it’s probably not your friends’ first time being a maid. Make your wedding stand out (and earn yourself an A+ bride rating!) by doing some special things for your girls throughout the process:

1) Ask them in style – The first interaction your bridesmaids will have with you as a bride is when you ask them to be in the wedding party, so do it right! You don’t have to go crazy (a Bridesmaids style invite complete with live butterfly is not necessary); a simple, chic, personalized card is a timeless approach that is sure to have them saying “yes!”

These ADORABLE cards (by fab local artist Holly Nichols) are available on our online site, Frills, and can be customized with different names/shoe colors!

2) Plan a get together – Kick your wedding planning off with a bang by organizing a fun event for your girls! This is especially important if your bridesmaids don’t all know each other; it’s your job to facilitate the getting acquainted process. Take a cocktail making class, plan an outing at a local vineyard, indulge in a spa day…the list of possibilities goes on and on! It will be fun for everyone and it’ll show your girls that you care, which will get them excited to help you plan for the main event!

3) Take their opinions into account – This is a good idea across the board, but especially with their look. Think about creating a special “bridesmaids’ style” Pinterest board and give them access to add to it. Then, use their ideas as a jumping off point for your dress shopping trip. They will respect that you have taken their preferences to heart and will end up looking and feeling better for it!

Worried they'll have differing opinions? Jenny Yoo shows that it's OK (even beautiful!) to mix and match dresses and colors!

4) Give them a shout out – The rehearsal dinner is the perfect time to make your love for your bridesmaids’ known. Most of the important people in your life will be there, so calling them out specifically is sure to bring a tear to their eye and earn you major bride points (and make up for that inevitable bridezilla moment that every bride has).

5) Be the wedding morning maven – By the day of the wedding, your bridesmaids will have done a ton to help you, so it’s time to let them know how much you appreciate all of their hard work! Order room service, bring in their favorite coffee, pop some champagne and create a fun, stress free getting ready environment full of gratitude!

6) Take your photos over the top – If you have time, talk to your photographer about doing special portraits with each of your bridesmaids. Also offer to have their significant others involved. If they can walk away from your wedding with a professional photo with you and their hunny (maybe even their families!) they are sure to remember you as the bride to beat!

Whatever you do, always remember that your bridesmaids’ whole lives are not dedicated to your wedding. Stay involved in what’s going on in their lives too and make time for non-wedding talk. Trust us, you’ll probably want to get your mind off the big day every once and awhile too 🙂

Flower Girl Dresses

Fresh, new ideas for the little lady in your life!

flower girl
noun
1. A young girl at a wedding ceremony who precedes the bride and carries or scatters flowers in her path.

Alternate definition: A young girl who has a strong chance of stealing your thunder.

The wedding day is all about the bride – oh yeah, and you too, grooms 😉 – but if there had to be a second in command, it would be the flower girl. She’s cute – almost too cute – and the wedding can’t start without her. She’s basically a mini-bride. She sets the tone for your own walk down the aisle, so you definitely want her happy and excited. How can you ensure that? Well, with little ones there’s never a guarantee but if you dress her right, she’s probably going to jump at the chance to hit that aisle and strut her stuff. Check out these fresh, new ideas for flower girls and get your little lady runway (i.e. aisle) ready:

1) Redefine “flower” girl – Flower petals are the classic, standard accessory for flower girls (duh), but they’re not always practical. If your ceremony is outdoors, they’ll probably end up flying all over the place. Not to mention the fact that flower girls are notorious for either not throwing the petals at all, or dropping them in huge, random clumps. Not exactly the delicate scattering of petals you were hoping for. You can avoid that by giving her a modern, unique item to carry. Try a clever sign, or what about a big, bright balloon? And that chic parasol? We’re swooning!

2) Give her happy feet – A comfortable kid is a happy kid, so get her started off on the right foot with some cute, yet comfortable footwear. Mini Uggs, cowboy boots, Toms, or even Hunter rain boots are sure to be met with ooh’s and ahh’s from your guests as well as your flower girl!

We found these cuties on Pinterest :)

3) Get her ‘do just right – While we are obsessed with the flower crowns we’ve been seeing for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls alike, it’s time for some new alternatives. We love this lace headband. Lace is so very bridal and therefore perfect for the big day! Also, every girl loves some bling, so why not adorn her top knot with some sparkle? And for the little diva in your life, a mini-veil is an accessory that’s sure to make her feel special and wow your guests!

4) Dress for success – Gone are the days of simple white dresses with a color coordinated sash. There are tons of adorable, modern dress styles for your flower girls! Jenny Yoo has numerous options that are sure to set your girl apart, and they even go along with the hot, new trends we’re seeing in bridal gowns. Lace, sleeves, colors; there’s something for every girl’s taste!

Unique Wedding Gowns

Easy, elegant ways to step outside of the box!

We’ve been back from Spring bridal market for almost a week now but we’re still in total swoon mode over all of the stunning styles that we saw there! We pinch ourselves every time market rolls around; we can’t believe it’s our job to watch fashion shows and buy pretty, new dresses for the showroom. It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it 🙂 One thing we always notice at market is how bridal gowns are constantly evolving. There are so many options out there; wedding gowns can no longer be defined as just “a white dress.” For brides looking to break the mold, these days there are tons of gorgeous ways to step outside the box and wear something unique:

1) Embrace the rainbow! White can be tough color to wear, and if you’re not comfortable in it, don’t feel like you have to wear it. If an alternatively hued dress just feels more “you”, go for it! Check out these wedding dresses with color – still elegant and oh so bridal!

2) Think short! While the majority of wedding gowns are still floor length, every year we see more and more styles with higher hems. A shorter dress will be lightweight, comfortable and easy to dance in, and most of them are formal enough to still feel bridal. If you still want the long look for your ceremony, though, consider adding a removable skirt over your short dress, and get the best of both worlds!

Amy Kuschel sure knows how to make a pretty little white dress! Her Jackie Lady Stardust (left) and Mimosa (right) dresses are just stunning! Want to add some length? Jenny Yoo's London skirt is perfection!

3) Change up the fabric! Lace still reigns supreme in the bridal world (for good reason – it’s gorge) but we’re so excited by all of the new fabrics we’re seeing these days. Completely beaded? Why not! Flowers? Sure! A traditional silhouette in a bold fabric is the perfect way to be unique but still look like a bride!

Theia is the king of alternative fabrics! Pearls and beads and petals, oh my!

Whatever you choose, just be true to yourself! These days, there is truly a style to suit every bride, so do your research and find what is truly “you”! Happy shopping 🙂

Wedding Dress Shopping

How do you know when you’ve found “the one”?

Quick bride poll: Do you watch any of those wedding dress shopping shows? I always wonder if brides find them helpful or overwhelming. They’re TV shows, after all, so they tend to bring the drama; mean moms, tight timelines and petrifying prices, to name a few. Another thing? Most brides on these shows seem to have that clarifying, aha moment when they just know that a dress is “the one.” Well we’re here to tell you, not everyone has that moment, and that’s OK! We’ve heard brides question themselves all too often: “I’m not getting that feeling” or “I’m not sure if it’s the one because I didn’t cry.” These shows can make us think that there is a particular way we should act, look and feel when we’ve found the right dress, and that’s not always the case. Everyone’s dress shopping experience is different, and their reactions to it are also different. If you’re one of the many who isn’t getting that mysterious, special “feeling”, we’ve come up with some other tell tale signs that you’ve found the dress for you:

Forgive us while we use this blog as an excuse to share pics of some gorgeous brides who found "the one" at Flair! Christa is an elegant, happy and stunning bride in Jenny Yoo's Georgeanne gown!

Forgive us while we use this blog as an excuse to share pics of some gorgeous brides who found “the one” at Flair! First up, Christa is an elegant, happy and STUNNING bride in Jenny Yoo’s Georgeanne gown!

1) You can’t stop thinking about it – Find yourself day dreaming about a particular dress? Thinking about the low back when you should be sending your boss an email? Imagining the beading as you stroll through the grocery aisles? You may have found your dress!
2) You compare all others dresses to it – Most brides don’t stop shopping when they find a dress that they love. We get it; you want to be sure you’ve tried on enough styles! However, if you find yourself constantly measuring other dresses against one you’ve already tried and liked, it’s probably the one for you!
3) You’ve accessorized it in your head – Sometimes our heads are ahead of our hearts! Maybe without even realizing you’re doing it, you’ve already decided what belt to add to a particular dress, or what heirloom jewelry of your Grandmother’s would go well with it. In your mind, you’ve already purchased this dress and are taking the next step to accent it with some bling. There’s probably a reason for that…

Bottom line: If you get that aha feeling, great, but if you don’t 1) you’re not alone and 2) that doesn’t mean you haven’t found your dream dress! No two shopping experience are alike just like no two brides are alike, so just trust your gut, watch for these signs and most of all, enjoy some fun, happy and pressure free dress shopping!

Brides of Distinction 2015

A Day in the Life

If you follow us on Instagram (@flairboston) then you probably saw some photos from an event we did yesterday; the Brides of Distinction Brunch at the Omni Parker House! We’ve participated in this event for several years now and it’s always so much fun, for us and for the brides who attend! Basically, it’s a time for brides and their friends and family to come see the Omni’s stunning ballroom decorated for a wedding, giving them a good sense if the venue is right for them! How often do you get to see your venue decorated, in person, prior to booking? It’s SUCH a great idea! Even if some of the brides have already booked the Omni, it’s a great time for them to get a sense of the space and figure out how to make it their own on their wedding day! In addition, there’s delicious food and drinks, cakes to taste, fab vendors to meet and greet AND a fun fashion show, courtesy of Flair! Here’s how our day went:

8:00 AM – Models report for hair and makeup – We are the luckiest girls; we have absolutely beautiful friends who offer to double as models for this amazing event! They got up super early on a Sunday to do this for us, and we are eternally grateful! We’re also majorly grateful for Alexandra Makeup Artistry and Bella Hair Studio for making the girls so glam and gorgeous! Brides, you MUST book them for your wedding! We had 8 models for this event and ALL of them looked absolutely perfect, so these ladies can totally handle your wedding party!

12:15 – The show begins! – Our owner, Stacey, and local TV personality Jenny Johnson emcee the fashion show, giving the audience all of the important details on each style! They cover it all; the fabric, the fit, what wedding style each would be appropriate for and what body types should wear them. It’s a fun, easy way for brides and bridesmaids to “shop” for their dresses without having to try anything on! The cell phones cameras were snapping away; these dresses were a hit!

12:45 – Show’s over! – Each model quick changed into three different styles during the show; backstage was crazy but fun! At the end, there was a final walk through and then, in the blink of an eye the show was over! We loved being able to connect with all of those brides in such a short amount of time and in such a fun, casual environment. Also, working with all of the other amazing wedding vendors was such a joy, everyone there was top notch!

Flair in Primetime!

Here at Flair, we are pretty big TV fans (hey, with this brutal winter, there’s not much else to do). We pore over all of Mindy Kaling/Lahiri’s fashions, get most of our “news” from “The Newsroom” and use Coach Taylor’s epic, pre-game speeches to get us pumped up for the day. Yes, we’re dorks, and yes, we’re OK with it. So, you can imagine our happiness when we saw some of OUR dresses featured on two TV weddings recently!

First up: “Glee”. We loved Brittany and Santana’s wedding for many reasons. Most importantly, we got to see a stunning same sex wedding in prime time, which is pretty fabulous. Next, they had a rustic chic wedding in a barn; a wedding style that we love and that we see alot of in our area. Lastly, they wore dresses by designers that WE carry! Santana rocked the popular Dakota gown by Nicole Miller while Brittany was ethereal in Jenny Yoo’s Vionnet gown. Not only that, but the bridesmaids wore dresses by Alfred Sung, another Flair designer! It was amazing to see the girls in dresses that we recognized by designers that we love AND we were thrilled that the show chose to highlight affordable, gorgeous dresses that ANY bride/bridesmaid can wear!

IMG_1903 IMG_1905 IMG_1906

Next up: “New Girl”. Another show that we love! In true, quirky, “New Girl” fashion this wedding wasn’t without its hitches and hijinks, but one thing was certainly a success: the bride’s dress! Jess’ Dad’s fiancé Ashley (aka Dee from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) wore Jenny Yoo’s Camilla gown and looked chic and comfortable (despite this photo – sorry there weren’t better ones available)!

Flair’s Fashion Week Recap!

Fashion Week Spring 2015 Trend Report!

Well, another Fashion Week has come to a close. This year, though, was a little different. There was all of the usual glitz, glamour and fun, but with a quiet note of sadness mixed in as the fashion world mourned the great Joan Rivers. Two things Joan loved most, though, were fashion and laughter, so I think she’d be fine with us getting back to those! So, we’re here to recap some of the major trends seen on this year’s runway! As you probably know, even though Fashion Week is in the fall, everything on the runway was made for Spring 2015. So we’re all getting a little preview of what’s to come; perfect for Spring/Summer 2015 brides! While most runway looks are not intended for weddings necessarily, there are subtle ways you can pop their trends into your big day!

1) 3D details: This year’s looks were literally popping off the runway! Designers were using multi-layered sequins, tons of paillettes, beading, crystals and even 3D florals to bring their looks to life. You can achieve this look with our petal bridal gown by Theia, which is covered in stunning fabric petals, giving you that on trend, 3D look!

This Vera Wang stunner embodies the 3D perfectly! As for the Theia gown, she does too, and you can get her at Flair!!

2) Metallics: Shades of Gold, Silver and Bronze were all over the runways this year! Metallics are great for a wedding; in general they are neutrals so you can pair them with whatever other colors you like! No need to stress over if the napkins, bridesmaids’ dresses, flowers and programs will coordinate! Get the look with Jenny Yoo’s Metallic Lace, seen here on her Hudson dress!

3) Pleats: OK, we have to pat ourselves on the back here. Pleats have been big in the wedding world for years, and the high fashion world is finally catching up! Pleats are super flattering and add the perfect, subtle detail to any dress! Steal this look for less with Dessy’s style 2880; pleats and rouching and flattering galore!

We love these Calvin Klein pleats almost as much as Dessy's ;)

4) Blush: OK, another pat on the back for us! Blush has been huge in the wedding world for the past couple of years, and it looks like it’s here to stay for atleast one more! Blush is soft, romantic and generally pretty flattering, making it the perfect wedding color! More good news: you can get this look with pretty much every designer at Flair! Check it out here on Siri’s Dahlia dress; stunning!

Wedding Inspiration courtesy of Pantone!

We love when Pantone comes out with their color picks for the upcoming season! Per usual, though, the fashion world is a little ahead of the rest of us. The New York Fashion Week happening right now is featuring Spring 2015 looks, and Pantone is following suit by highlighting colors that will be hot in that same season. That’s perfect for the wedding industry though! We’re starting to get super busy with Spring/Summer 2015 brides who can now all take advantage of Pantone’s psychic vision into what will be hot in their wedding season! We’re highlighting a few of the stunning shades below, with Flair dresses to match, of course! There are tons more to choose from, though, so give us a call to stop in and start envisioning the looks that will be coming down your 2015 runway/asile!

Bride Spotlight: Lindsey

Bride Spotlight: Lindsey

Asking a Flair consultant if they have a favorite wedding is like asking a parent if they have a favorite child. It’s impossible to choose! Each one is unique and special in its own way, and we truly do love them all equally. That being said, sometimes a wedding comes along that is so stunning and so well put together, that we can’t help but show it off! That brings us to Lindsey. Her wedding turned out to be just like Lindsey herself; chic, classic and so lovely. We could go on and on singing Lindsey’s praises but instead, we thought all of you might like to hear from the bride herself! Lindsey has some great advice for all of you brides to be, complete with some pretty enchanting photos from her big day. Huge kudos to The Darkroom Photography, who captured Lindsey’s day so thoughtfully and beautifully!

1) Where did you have your wedding?
Wedding was at 5:00 at Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica in Saint Simons Island, GA. Reception was a strolling reception with a band and began with a cocktail hour overlooking the beach at  The King and Prince Beach and Golf resort in Saint Simons Island, GA.
I mean just check out those gorgeous grounds at Lindsey's wedding; a photographer's dream!

I mean just check out those gorgeous grounds at Lindsey’s wedding; a photographer’s dream!

2) Did your wedding have a theme?
No particular theme for the wedding, but I wanted everything to be similar to my style in my daily life. Classic, timeless, and staying far away from trends!
3) How did you find wedding planning? Stressful? Fun? Both?
I am VERY much a planner and very A-type.  I carry 2 IPhones/2Ipads (work and personal) and a planner for daily use.  However, I did NOT like wedding planning.  It was tough to do long distance and I had to make a few trips down South for vendor meetings.  I did a LOT of emailing and had to trust my mom a LOT!  At some point, I took a friends advice “Decide on what matters most to you.  Be very decisive on those things, and relax on the “less important” details.”  I would love to do the day over, but not the planning!! I now understand why honeymoons exist 🙂
4) Describe your bridal gown shopping experience.
I planned one day and only visited two bridal boutiques.  I went to Flair first and LOVED every thing about the boutique.  The Flair girls were so sweet and so un-pretentious.  Y’all made me feel so special and gave honest feedback, which was so helpful.  I tried on dresses in about 30 minutes and felt fairly certain that I had found “the one.”  It was the dress that when I put it on, I felt like a more glamorous version of “me.”  I visited one more store but ultimately went back to Flair because I couldn’t get the dress I loved out of my head.   Every visit after was so exciting and the girls were so excited for me when I came in to pick out a belt, show my shoes, etc.
Sneak Peak 034 (2)

Lindsey’s classic Jenny Yoo sweetheart gown lends itself perfectly to her intricate AB Ellie belt!

5) What dress did you end up choosing?
I chose a Jenny Yoo sweetheart cut dress.  It was exactly the style that I HOPE I portray in daily life.  Classy, timeless, simple but elegant.  Once I came in for my first fitting, I looked for belts and settled on one that was AMAZING and took the dress to another level.  I knew when I put it on, I had to have that belt added to my dress.  (The team at Newbury Tailors were AWESOME!!)
6) Describe your bridesmaids’ dress shopping experience.
I chose bridesmaids dresses on a separate visit, but knew I wanted to start with Flair because the dresses were much more up to date than you see at a lot of dress shops.  My mom and I did the shopping, and I tried the dresses on. I didn’t want to come with bridesmaids because I felt strongly that it was my wedding and I didn’t want anyone to skew my opinion of the dresses.   I knew the look I was going for and chose a dress that would flatter everyone but didn’t cater to any one specific need of any of the girls.
Most brides say “I think you will be able to wear this dress again” and I have NEVER actually worn a bridesmaid dress again.  I chose a dress that I thought was classy, but with a little sparkle to dress it up a bit.  One of my bridesmaids called and said to me “We all say it, but you actually did find a dress that I will wear again!”
Jenny Yoo's Harlow dress has it all: super flattering, unique and gorgeous!!

7) What bridesmaids’ dress(es) did you end up choosing?
Jenny Yoo ‘Harlow’ metallic sheath dress
8) What dress shopping advice would you give to future brides?
As cliché as it sounds, you will know when you have found the dress for you.  Don’t go with a crowd, keep it small.  The more opinions you get, the more it skews your opinion and only YOU know what look you are going for.  I had no idea what I wanted in a dress but when I put it on, it just felt right and looked like ‘me’.  Your wedding gown should be a reflection of you and remember that it will remain in pictures in your home forever.  Steer away from trends or dresses that aren’t YOU.  I wanted to be able to look at pictures in my home without cringing!  I did try on the very “princess” gowns with the tulle and lace, but at the end of the day, they looked silly on me.
Thank you SO much Lindsey, we loved every minute of working with you and wish you every happiness and joy in your married life! Come back and see us anytime! xo
