Spotlight on Devon’s Joyous & Bright Wedding!

There is nothing we enjoy more than hearing from our brides after their weddings. We truly love working with all of you and are so happy to see and hear how your big days went! Plus, the photos are always gorgeous eye candy, and today is no exception! Today’s bride spotlight is on Devon, a super sweet Flair bride.  Devon earned an A+ from Flair for being an uber prepared bride (ahem, future Flair brides take note). She contacted us in advance of her appointment and gave us a really good idea of what she was looking for. She even had a list of favorites from our designer’s websites, which is a huge help. Basically, Devon wanted something a little unique and something that her girls could wear again, and I think we hit the nail on the head! Check out her helpful comments below and as well as some absolutely stunning photos from her July wedding. Thanks and congrats Devon, you were an absolute joy to work with and we hope to see you and your girls again in the future!

What was the inspiration for your wedding?

We wanted our wedding to be JOYFUL. To us, joy is being surrounded by the people we love most, who come from many parts of our lives. We chose an intimate Vermont Inn for our wedding site because this setting allowed us all to spend the weekend together in one place.  We had the Inn entirely to ourselves and filled every room!  Joy for us is also fun and games. We had a wiffle ball tournament, a road race, and all sorts of yard games. We love these activities, and they also provided a fun way for people to get to know each other over the course of the weekend.  When I see bright colors, I immediately feel a sense of increased happiness and cheer. For our wedding colors, the inspiration came for a brightly colored scarf that my mom always wore on special occasions when we were growing up. This scarf has white background covered in large, vibrant hot pink, orange, red, yellow, and purple flowers with Kelly green leaves, and I carried it with me throughout the wedding planning process to make sure the colors I was choosing met my criteria for “joyful.”

What were you looking for in a bridesmaid dress?

I wanted a dress that the girls could wear again and that was not the classic cookie-cutter bridesmaid dress. So many dresses all looked “the same” and I wanted the girls to have something unique. Additionally, it was very important to me to find a dress that the girls actually liked, that flattered everyone, and that they would be comfortable dancing in.

What dress did you choose? What color?

Siri Bali dress in popsicle!

How was Lindsay most helpful?

So many ways…where to start? Lindsay was super organized! She knew her stuff, and went out of her way to be sure that our experience at Flair was highly personal. I traveled from Burlington, VT to visit Flair and before my trip, Lindsay had been really clear with me about what styles they had in stock by what designers and in what colors so that my trip was worthwhile. Beyond that, we ended up choosing a dress that was not even on my list to look at, so although all her legwork was “for nothing,” she was still SUPER accommodating, patient, and friendly! Furthermore, when scheduling prevented us from all coming to one appointment, Lindsay finagled the schedule so that I was able to have three appointments within 2 hours to get all of the girls in to try things on.

Any tips for brides when selecting their BM dresses?  Bridal Gowns?

DO get started early. Feeling rushed is no fun! Also, for all the online scoping out of dresses that I did, you never know until you actually get yourself or your girls into a dress. The logistics of getting people to try things on can be nightmarish, but it’s worth it!

How was your experience at Flair?

Fabulous!

Where did you get married?

Quechee Inn at Marshland Farm, Quechee, VT

What three adjectives would best describe your wedding?

JOYOUS, BRIGHT, Relaxed

What was your favorite moment at the wedding?

Listening to my husband read his vows to me!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Quebec City, Quebec

What advice can you give any other Boston/New England Bride?

When deciding whom you would like to be a bridesmaid, ask yourself, “Which of the wonderful women in my life will be able to support me best on my wedding day?” I could not have asked for more loving, helpful, and fun bridesmaids! They bent over backwards to make the whole build up to our big day special—throwing showers and bachelorette events that were tailored just for me, and remaining unbelievably patient as I sent them thousands of neurotic emails telling them things that they could not possibly have cared about. Furthermore, on my big day they made things that could have been stressful into hilarious jokes. For example, the lovely buttons on the back of my dress were absolutely impossible to fasten and we were running rather late. Instead of stressing out, my girls started doing some cheers while my sister fought with the buttonholes. Every other day of your life is a good time to be in a balanced, give-and-take reciprocal relationship with the women you love, but onyour wedding day, it is all about you. Friends and family who understand and embrace this make the day that much more magical.

Spotlight on Yvonne & Jake’s Summer Inspired Wedding!

Where did your inspiration come from?

Jake, my now husband, and I both LOVE the summer. It is by far our favorite season, we love everything about it – the heat, the humidity, the fun, the relaxation; this is basically what I used as the springboard for our wedding. All of our favorite memories and big moments all seemed to happen in August, the first August we exchanged “I love you’s”, the second August we got engaged and so undoubtedly the third August was our wedding month! For most of our relationship we lived long distance, however, for that last summer before we got engaged I was working in Danbury, CT and Jake was working and living on his Grandfather’s apple orchard in the same town. Jake grew up on this farm and we have had a lot of great memories there. The night we got engaged was a normal summer night, I went to the farm, we sat outside and enjoyed the warm breeze, sipped a cold beer  – but Jake had a ring in his pocket this night! It was relaxed, personal, and the perfect setting for our engagement. We had our engagement pictures taken on the farm by my best friend and maid of honor, and just like our engagement it was relaxed, personal and fun. These were the three biggest factors I kept returning to while planning my wedding day – relaxed, personal and fun.

How did you tie in “relaxed, personal and fun”, when choosing the bridesmaid dress and wedding dress?

For the bridesmaid dresses, I wanted a summery, fun dress but more importantly I wanted each of the girls to be very comfortable and LOVE the dress. I didn’t want them to have to spend a lot either. I had a hard time finding the perfect dress, I actually bought a few and returned them! It wasn’t until about 5 months before the wedding that I went to Flair and found the Lynn Lugo line. My favorite part about her dresses was that you could switch tops and bottoms to create the perfect fit for each girl!

For my wedding dress, I knew I really wanted something with lace but I also wanted a dress that would stand out, not just an ordinary white dress. I wanted it to be really fun, a little sassy but also to have a traditional sense about it. I found the perfect Liz Fields dress at Cinderella’s in RI.

Stacey was very helpful right from the beginning and all the way through to the end! She introduced us to the Lynn Lugo line, showed us the colors and how to mix and match. She gave us tips for body types and measuring. She was also great when helping us order! I was so happy with Flair and everyone there! It was a great experience.

Any tips for brides picking out bridesmaid dresses ?

DON’T SETTLE!!!! It might take a while but if you have a vision, stick to it!! Try a few different places and a few different styles. Talk to your girls, see what they like and feel comfortable in. And DO NOT pick ugly dresses to make the bride look more beautiful – the bride is always beautiful there is never competition, but ugly bridesmaid dresses WILL make your pictures ugly! So be nice! 🙂

I had 6 bridesmaids, all with very different body types, and some were very picky! I needed a dress that fit what I wanted for a color (warm, deep summery pink) but that would also look great on each girl and not break the bank. I was looking for a dress that looked casual but beautiful – which was very hard to find! But then I stumbled across Lynn Lugo and within minutes found the PERFECT dress! I wish I had one!

Any tips for picking out the perfect bridal gown?

I went into the boutique saying I wanted a modified A line, silk organza, tube top dress and I came out with a modified mermaid, lace dress with one shoulder strap!! Try on every, or many different styles so when you finally buy YOUR DRESS you don’t feel like you missed something, (because new beautiful dresses always come out right after you buy yours! ) Ask the price BEFORE you try it on – if its out of our budget, put it back fast. Once you buy one, stop looking or you will go nuts!

Where were was your wedding/reception?

We got married at Roger Williams Park in RI. This was a personal location for me – both sets of my grandparents had their wedding pictures taken at the park, and one of our first dates was to the Roger Williams Zoo which is part of the park. There is a photo that we took in the Japanese garden that we copied from my late grandparents Richard and Charlotte Fielding – its the one where I am lifting my dress to show off my garter and the groom is squatting down and the other groomsmen are standing nearby.

Um, hello adorable!!

What was your favorite moment at the wedding?

It was right before I walked down the aisle. It is the most emotional time of the whole event. My dad kept telling to look at everyone who was there and saying how they were all there for me. Its a strange feeling, having your dad walk you down the aisle to your waiting husband to be and have him you away, but its so exciting  to know that all of the people who are most important to you are there and supporting this new chapter of your life.

What advice would you give to all the brides out there?

My best advice is to ENJOY the planning! Try to make it a fun thing and not stressful. Try not to do too much yourself and DO NOT save anything for THAT day!! Also, before you walk down the aisle take a minute to process everything – who is there, what the walk you are making resembles, really take it in because there is no other feeling quite like it. And even during the reception take a minute with your new husband to step back and just watch everyone celebrating – you are going to be so busy talking with everyone but really try to capture a moment because when its all over, it feels like a big blur!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

We went to Cancun, Mexico and stayed at Secrets, Silversands – it was a 10!

“If I Could Turn Back Time”

Probably the biggest regret I have when I look back on my wedding planning is that I didn’t consider videography more seriously. We talked about it once or twice but ultimately decided that that was one area where we could save some money.

Cut to today, as the Flair girls are crying watching the beautiful videography of Boston Wedding Films, I Do films, Kiss the Bride films and more. Now I really really wish I had one of my own. Seriously, call up Michael J Fox because I want to go back in time and right this wrong!

OK, let’s face facts though; videography is not cheap. You’re already paying a pretty penny for a photographer so it can be easy to, like me, think that videography is not necessary. However, to have an audible recording of your vows, a full visual of you walking down the aisle…priceless! Grab some tissues and check out some of our fav videos on Boston Weddings Films’ blog and we’re sure they will convince you of the same!

Regretfully yours,

Lindsay 😉

Bridesmaids’ gifts made easy!!

Your Flair consultants really sacrifice for you. We took an hour out of our day yesterday to walk down Newbury Street in search of fab jewelry and gifts for your best girls. It was grueling but we were happy to do it for you .

Our new obsession is Bobbles and Lace at 251 Newbury Street. They have absolutely amazing pieces at even more amazing prices! The jewelry is for the most part current and trendy, but they have classic styles too. We fell in love with their collection of rose gold jewelry; it’s the perfect combination of classic with an interesting twist. Plus, they have gorgeous bags and clutches if you decide to forgo the jewelry route. There’s something for everyone!

BONUS: They also have a great selection of super cute shoes and clothes so you can reward yourself for finding such great gifts for your girls. Perfection!

If you want a more interactive gift for your ladies, take them to the bangle bar at Alex and Ani (115 Newbury Street). The concept is simple: pick a bangle and then add a charm from their wide selection. They make the perfect memory of your day together and of your appreciation for them. The charm/friendship bracelet has gone modern people and you heard it here first (OK, maybe not first…)!

We’re sure your girls will love whatever you give them but if you want to be 100% sure, take our advice and hit up these Newbury Street hot spots. You’ll thank us!

XOXO

Hot Hot Hot honeymoons!

As anyone who reads this blog knows, I got married almost 2 months ago (are you sick of hearing about it yet?). First of all, it feels like 2 years ago. The wedding planning phase came and went so quickly and now it feels like forever since we actually got hitched. Time is funny that way…anyways, back to the point of this blog: my hubby and I chose not to honeymoon right afterwards ::GASP::. I know it’s a little different but as native New Englanders, we are fully aware that we only get a few months of really nice weather here and we wanted to enjoy them.

So, we decided to go to the Bahamas in December when we’ll be itching for some sun. I just booked it today (yay!) so that got me to thinking about what other brides are doing for their honeymoons. Are any of you going later like we are? Are you driving across country? Are you skipping your honeymoon all together (I hope not!)? Here are some unique, fun ideas for anyone looking to do something a little different:

1)      Mini-moon: For those of you who may be thinking of skipping your honeymoon due to budget restrictions, a mini-moon may be just the thing for you! Like the name indicates, it’s a mini honeymoon; a few days away in a location within driving distance. Yes, it will still cost some $$ but not nearly as much as 7-10 nights in a hotel plus flights. Jay and I took one (yes we’re brats and did a mini-moon and a regular ‘moon) so that we could get away for a few days after the wedding. We went to Maine and it was FAB, highly recommended!

2)      Charity-moon: Does a week lounging in the sun feel just too unproductive for you (wish I could relate)? Consider doing Habitat for Humanity as a wedding getaway. There are Habitat for Humanity projects all around the country so you can still get away and help others at the same time!

3)      Adventure-moon: Again, not a problem for me but I know there are brides out there who do not think drinks by the pool is the ideal honeymoon. For you, maybe a South African safari would do? Or a week long bike trip in the Mediterranean?

The Knot came up with a few awesome adventures, take a peek below!

Wedding Wire also has a great application that helps you find inspiration for your honeymoon dreams and an endless amount of galleries!

Have fun thinking outside of the box, brides, and think of the honeymoon whenever you get a little stressed during your wedding planning. It will all be worth it !

Happy travels!

Lindsay 🙂

Fashion’s Night Out: A Retrospecive

Hello happy brides and maids! Did you hit up Fashion’s Night Out? It’s the first time this event has taken place in Boston for 15 years and we were pumped to check it out! What a cool concept; fabulous stores stay open late, pump you full of free apps and beverages and give you discount on their wares. Hello, nothing wrong with that! Plus, we secretly loved walking in the middle of a blocked off Newbury Street.

Some Flair favs:

1)      DVF (duh, always a fav) had some AMAZING deals! Stacey found an adorable black lace mini for $325. Perfect for a rehearsal dinner, shower, etc.

2)      Ted Baker had some adorable dresses! They are super fun and flirty, perfect for a bachelorette! One of our favorites was a black cocktail dress with a tiered skirt. The fabric was a layer of tulle with chiffon sewn over top, so unique!

3)      Bobbles and Lace is a new addition to Newbury Street, with a recent move from the North End.  We are sure they’ll be a HUGE success with the venue change! This is definitely the place to hit up for bridesmaids’ jewelry. We’re already planning a trip back there to take a more in depth peek, be on the lookout for more info on them in a future blog…

In short, we hope it doesn’t take another 15 years to have a Boston’s Fashion Night Out! We’re sure it was a huge success and are already looking forward to next year!

Fashionably Yours

Spotlight on Lindsay & Jay! A “Flair-y Tail” Wedding!

What is a “Flair-y Tail” wedding you ask?

Once upon a time on a hot day in July after months and months of planning and thinking about her big day, the manager at Flair finally got married!  Although it was one of the hottest days of the year…..hovering around 90 degrees all day….it was a beautiful clear summer day for Lindsay and Jay to tie the knot, and as a guest at the wedding, it truly was a magical and gorgeous day! Here is what our esteemed manager had to say about her big day! XOXO

What was your inspiration for your wedding?

This is going to sound bad coming from someone in the wedding industry but I really didn’t have a theme or any one thing that inspired the wedding. As I got to each to each item (stationary, cake, dresses, etc) I really just chose what appealed to me most visually and hoped that everything looked great together in the end (which it did!). Personally, I am not a huge fan of theme weddings but every bride is different! One theme that did sort of creep out after we made a few decisions is that most everything was black, white and gray, so we ended up with a very neutral wedding. We really only had pops of color in the pink flowers and some pale pink in the cake. Brides, I encourage you to not get too caught up in a theme. Yes, sailboats are adorable on your personalized cocktail napkins, but you don’t necessarily need them on your cake, men’s ties, etc. This is your one chance to just choose things that you love and make it all about you, so go for it!

How did you tie that in to what you choose for your bridesmaid dresses/bridal gown?

After months of cutting out wedding gown photos from magazines, I found that all of the ones I loved had a few things in common: mermaid, strapless, ruffles. Turns out, I had a very specific style! I found just that at Kleinfeld in NYC; it was a great experience, though I would have loved the ease of purchasing my gown at Flair!!

I felt a lot of pressure when it came to the bridesmaids’ dresses. First things first, I wanted to make sure my girls loved their dress. Secondly, I work so close to the bridesmaids’ process that I really felt pressure to do something unique. This lead me to my two tone dresses. I am madly in love with them! A big thanks to Lynn Lugo for doing the two tone for me, I highly recommend it to brides looking to set their dresses apart a little.

What did you choose?

I chose the Tate dress by Lynn Lugo; gorgeous! Yes, I went with a trendier style with the one shoulder, but that truly didn’t bother me. It was my favorite and the girls’ favorite so that’s what we went with. Don’t overthink it brides! If you find one that everyone (or most everyone) likes by all means STOP LOOKING and go for it!

What color(s)?

Keeping with the neutral theme that developed, I went with a silver top and a gunmetal skirt. My sister/MOH had a black crystal A.B. Ellie belt to set her apart a little (more like a lot…she had more bling than me…). I love neutrals, it makes it much easier for the girls to rewear (fingers crossed) and you can always add color in the flowers, shoes, etc.

Tips for brides when selecting their BM dresses? Bridal Gowns?

1) Don’t overthink it! Brides are constantly asking themselves “Is this too trendy” “Does this go with the table linens?” “What will soandso think?” If you like it, don’t question it, go for it! You don’t want to look back and wish you’d gone another way.

2) When you find a dress you love, stop looking! There are lots of pretty dresses out there so you could torture yourself and keep looking but you’ll just end up stressed and tried.

3) Know from the start that you may not make all of your bridesmaids’ happy. Pretty self-explanatory, but it’s true. If they’re your good friends they’ll wear whatever you want them to. You’re the one that has to look at the photos for forever, so make sure YOU like how it looks first and foremost!

4) Be ready to do some tailoring, every dress needs some. I had some and all of my bridesmaids did too. So, even the “experts” aren’t immune. It’s just a fact of bridal life so get used to it!

When and where was your wedding?

I knew from the start that I wanted a chic, downtown wedding. We were married in St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Back Bay with the reception at the Skywalk at the top of the Prudential Center. Great views for our out of town guests!

What was your favorite part of the wedding?

Our first dance! In the last two weeks before the wedding we decided to add 6 dance lessons to our already packed schedule; certifiable but was worth EVERY minute. It was nice to escape and take the lessons together and then wow our guests with an amazing choreographed dance. I will never forget their reactions!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

We are waiting to honeymoon until the winter. It’s so nice in New England right now but we’ll be glad to escape the snow in a few months! We’re thinking Hawaii or the Atlantis in the Bahamas.

Ode to Moxie!

Pretty shoes are one of the many reasons I am SO glad to be a girl. Seriously, do you ever just look at guys’ shoes and think “yawn?” I know I do. The September issue is out and the verdict is in, it is good to be a girl!

Shoes have a magical way of transforming your entire outfit. The same chunky sweater dress can look casual, daytime chic with a pair of Tory Burch riding boots (which I am currently coveting) and cocktail appropriate with the Sam Edelman “Renzo” studded booties (go to Bloomingdales.com, look them up, thank me later). The same goes for the shoes you choose for your wedding day. We know better than anyone that it’s all about the gown, but your shoes really say something about you too. Are you a classic, petal pink ballerina flat or a trendy, blue Manolo ala Carrie Bradshaw? Personally, I went with sparkly Christian Louboutins and I loved them just as much as my gown (maybe even more when you consider that you actually can wear them again)!

To ensure that you start your wedding shoe love story off right, do yourself a favor and head straight to Moxie on Charles Street. The girls there are super cute and helpful and have a wide variety of styles to suit every bride/bridesmaid. The store itself is adorable and welcoming and the location is ideal for a shopping day with your best girls. When we went into Moxie to do research for this blog I of course parlayed that into shopping for myself. Unfortunately they didn’t happen to have my size in the Tory Burch riding boots or Revas that I wanted. Normally, this is a legitimate reason to spiral but they offered to call me when they got more in. Now that’s service! So, say goodbye to the boring, old ivory wedding shoes of the past and say hello to gold sparkle Kate Spade’s, black petaled Badgley Mischka’s and more!
