To Market We Go: 2012 Edition!

Sorry this blog is coming about a week late Stacey and I have been exhausted from all our travel and excitement! Two  weeks ago we traveled to NYC for bridal market to check out the newest styles from our designers. Yes you read that right, we worked ALL weekend. We went to fashion shows and chatted with our fabulous designers/friends and shopped on 5th Avenue. It…was…awful.

JK, it was amazing!! It’s seriously one of our favorite weekends of the year, for two reasons. 1) We LOVE our designers and this is the one time a year we get to see them in person. Yes, it’s fun to see their new dresses, but it is equally fun just catching up with them. 2) We LOVE our brides/bridesmaids and we literally cannot wait to show you the new dresses, you’re going to be obsessed with them! While we don’t want to give away TOO much (the new samples will not be here until after the New Year), here are some fresh, new trends we saw for the upcoming season!

1)      Straps on bridal gowns: The time has come ladies. We’ve been asking for more strapped bridal gowns for years and this is the first year where we really saw a good amount in the new collections. V-necks, cap sleeves, and halters, oh my!

2)      Printed bridesmaids’ dresses: We are sosososo excited for this one. Doing a print on a bridesmaid’s dress is so fresh and modern, and makes for really unique and special photos. Not ready to come around to something so outside the box? Think one print, one textured fabric and one solid, all in the same color way. Google Molly Sims’ bridal party and that’ll give you a gorgeous example. Not all of the bridesmaids need to be in the pattern, but it’s a great accent to solid dresses’. VERY fun!

3)      Sherbet: First things first, is it sherbet or sherbert? I always thought it was sherbert but the computer disagrees; the red squiggly line underneath – indicating a misspelling – is really bugging me, so I’ll say sherbet from here on out. Anywaysssssss sherbet colors are going to be HUGE! We saw pale colors take the front seat this year (think blush and champagne) but cool greens and flattering oranges may just steal their spots next year. Stay tuned to see them in person!

4)      Tea length bridal gowns: This trend has been slowly creeping up on us. The past few years we have seen 1 or 2 at market but this year it EXPLODED. Every designer had some shorter options, but have no fear, they are still totally bridal looking! Plus, this is a great way to get a gorgeous dress at a lower price AND you don’t have to worry about bustling a train (definitely nice for outdoor weddings).

I could go on and on, we saw SO many amazing dresses! Stay tuned in early 2013 to see them in person!

Bridal Spotlight-A Very Flair Wedding!

What was your inspiration for your wedding?

Um, this is probably a faux pas especially since I am in the bridal industry but we had no inspiration for our wedding…I know that sounds bad.  We were just really excited to be celebrating and I look at wedding blogs daily so I took little things I liked from the past two years of blog stalking and threw them together!

How did you tie that inspiration in to what you choose for your bridesmaid dresses/bridal gown?

I guess if I had to say anything about the wedding style, I wanted it to be pretty timeless.  I wanted neutral colors on the girls and dresses that complimented each of the girl’s figures and made them feel great.  For my bridal gown I wanted something I would always look back on and think that I picked something that was my style and was classic like our venue!

What did you choose?

My bridal gown was a custom Coren Moore gown.  They made the Chloe with lace and made the front a deeper sweetheart and the back was brought down just slightly.  I added a customized gorgeous belt from A.B. Ellie!  She did an amazing job customizing The Mae belt for me by adding pearls and tons of extra beads to make sure the belt looked like it was a part of my dress!

My girls wore Jenny Yoo bridesmaid dresses most of which are now discontinued.  My maid of honor Carly wore the Thea, my sister Allison wore the Margauex, my sister-in-law Ali wore the Riley, Casey wore the Mackenzie, and Lily wore the fabulous Aidan!  The bridesmaids all wore some awesome accessories that I found a few years ago and since then, I have forgotten who made them – oops! However, I do know that my maid of honor’s necklace was made by the talented Kristen Kuhen.

What color?

I actually did mostly different colors!  Carly and Casey were in Slate Eastern Silk, Allison was in Slate Crinkle Chiffon, Lily was in Charcoal Lux Chiffon, and Ali was in Pewter Shantung.

What were you looking for in your bridesmaid dresses?

I was really open to whatever the girls wanted. I guided them in the direction that I liked and then let them choose.

What were you looking for in your bridal gown?

I actually looked all over for my bridal gown.  I knew I liked lace and I wanted a fitted style but I was hung-up on a ball gown for some reason.  I kept begging to try on ball gowns even though I was advised against it by everyone (including Lindsay)!  I finally realized I was just too short to be able to pull off the big dress, so I settled for a fuller trumpet silhouette. Coren’s dress was perfect because when I danced I felt like such a princess with the full skirt!

Tips for brides when selecting their BM dresses?  Bridal Gowns?

Timing is everything!  There is a method to our madness, I promise.  You have to do things in order for your look to be cohesiveYour venue is 1st, then move on to your bridal gown, then work on the girls’ dresses and mothers of the bride and groom.  Last but not least help your significant others pick their outfits!

How was your experience at Flair?

Well I own the store….so it was pretty good! 😉

Where did you get married??

Zak and I got married at The Harvard Club on Commonwealth Ave.  I can’t say enough about how much I love this venue! It was such a gorgeous and unique venue in the city, so traditional and cozy.  Zak wants to move in he loves it that much!

What three adjectives would best describe your wedding?

Funny, Elegant, and Light Hearted!

What was your favorite moment at the wedding?

The entire ceremony! I LOVED walking down the aisle because I thought it was so exciting and emotional all at once.   Our ceremony was very “us” we had a family friend marry us so he really knew that we wanted it to be a celebration of life and love. We also wrote our own vows which was nerve racking but in the end it really made our wedding so much fun and personal!

What advice can you give any other Boston/New England Bride?

Write your own vows, hire the best vendors, don’t sweat the small stuff, have fun, dance, eat, don’t drink, take tons of pictures, do a first look if you can, hire a videographer (we remembered nothing after), make sure to leave plenty of time for hair and makeup, take a ton of pictures, smell your flowers, enjoy every single moment and most of all have fun!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

We went to Couples Swept Away, in Negril Jamaica, thanks to the amazing Marisa Cole at Sensational Travel.

Heart Pounding Pastels!

The struggle of having to decide what to wear to a friend’s wedding, can be as difficult as deciding what to have your own bridesmaids wear on your big day. However, fashionistas like yourselves may take note that the Spring 2012 trend of pastels, lends itself to wedding fashion this current season. Hues such as pale pink, yellow, and blue took over the Spring 2012 runways, and have begun to trickle down into the  bridal scene. Although one might think that only Easter eggs should come in pastel, when done in the right manner the colors can look quite classy and feminine.

Designers such as Ralph Lauren and Diane Von Furstenberg sent their models down the catwalk in flowy pastel pieces, sometimes even throwing in a pastel colored floral print. Rodarte took the dominant trend to the extreme and closed their show with a series of floral pastel green, blue, and yellow printed dresses. This trend translates to the bridal industry in a major way, as it can easily be applied to dresses for spring and summer weddings. Our featured designers Anna Elyse and Coren Moore offer many of these trendy colors in much of their collections, which makes it easy for any bridesmaid or wedding-goer to be fashion forward! Worried that you or your bridesmaids won’t look good in pastels? Have no fear! Pastels truly go well with all skin tones, pale or dark and are not eccentric so that everyone can feel comfortable. The subdued feel of the tones also promise not to take away from other important details of a wedding, such as the color theme… or even the bride!

So now that we’ve sold you on either choosing pastel for your bridesmaids or for a dress for yourself, we would like to offer some suggestions that we have for you here at Flair! Anna Elyse offers gorgeous pastel colors in her Silk Chiffon and Sponged Silk Charmeuse Fabrics, which are both also fabulous lightweight fabrics for a spring/summer occasion.

Another designer who falls does a rendition of the trend is Coren Moore, who has great pastels in her silk shantung and silk chiffon fabrics. The designers offer many of their pieces in these fabrics, and they are sure to be perfect for spring.

We hope that if when it comes time to choose a dresses for your special occasion, you have difficult time during the Spring 2012 season, you will go with the trend of pastels. It is a simple, classy, yet fashion-forward way to show off your stylish side at the next wedding that you are in or attend. Who knows, maybe you will even be able to re-wear your pastel piece during this mad wedding season! You’re sure to be the most stylish group of bridesmaids or attendee at any wedding!

XOXO

Spotlight on Katie’s Perfect Pink Wedding!

We are on a roll with some seriously gorgeous weddings!!  We are so lucky to be a part of so many wonderful bride’s weddings, and Katie is no exception.  Every time she graced us with her presence at Flair we all left with a smile on our face!! She is warm, sweet and extremely kind!  Her wedding was infused with pink and complimented her venue in the Adirondacks Mountains. Enjoy her perfectly pink wedding.

What was your inspiration for your wedding?

The color pink and the Adirondacks!

How did you tie that inspiration in to what you choose for your bridesmaid dresses/bridal gown?

Our bridesmaids wore Coren Moore silk shantung azalea (light pink) dresses, I wore an azalea Coren Moore bridal sash for the reception and the groom and groomsmen wore pink Vineyard Vines ties.  The Coren Moore dresses and my gown were a perfect fit for a day wedding in the Adirondack Mountains.

What were you looking for in your bridesmaid dresses?

I wanted our bridesmaids to look and feel great in their dresses!  Two of our bridesmaids helped me select a handful of different styles from Coren Moore’s bridesmaid collection for each of them to choose from.  Though I did not let our bridesmiads decide on the color of their dresses, I wanted them to be able to pick a style of dress that they felt great in.  When you look and feel good in what you are wearing the day is always more fun!

How was Stacey/Lindsay/Brooke most helpful?

Stacey, Lindsay and Brooke were all very helpful!  Brooke helped me each time I visited Flair, she had wonderful suggestions and ideas for outfitting our bridal party.  All three girls assisted with placing orders and notifying me when anything arrived at the store.  Everyone at Flair was incredibly friendly, accommodating and responsive.

What did you choose for your bridal gown?

Coren Moore’s Chloe Gown in ivory silk shantung.  I wore an ivory bridal sash and my mother’s veil for the ceremony and an azalea bridal sash for the reception.

How was your experience at Flair?

Fantastic!  I highly recommend Flair to any bride for both her bridal gown and bridesmaid dresses.

Where did you get married?

We were married at Sacred Heart Church in Lake George, NY.  Our Reception was at The Sagamore Resort on Lake George in Bolton Landing, NY.

What was your favorite part of the Wedding?

All of it!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

For our honeymoon we vacationed at the Four Seasons Resort Lana’i at Manele Bay.  We highly recommend this location to any couples looking to honeymoon in Hawaii, it was so much fun!

Jill & Nate’s Nautical New England Wedding!

This wedding is close to my heart, mainly because I am lucky enough to say I know the bride and groom!  They are quite the two love birds….you know the type, making googly eyes at each other across the room, always rooting for each other whether it be at a marathon or a triathlon, they are each others biggest fans and seeing the sparks and love between the two of them is quite a joy for all those who know them.  I haven’t met two people who were more meant for each other!  And I really think it shows in their wedding pictures.  What a beautiful and romantic wedding for two people who truly deserve it! 😉
Enjoy the fabulous wedding of Mr & Mrs Nate & Jill Brown!
What was your inspiration for your wedding?
Our venue was truly our inspiration for our wedding. I had been to a baby naming for a newborn I babysat in highschool at the Atlantica.  I knew as I entered the function room that that is where I wanted to get married someday. The room has panoramic views of the harbor so we decided to go with a nautical theme, playing off the venue. We wanted our wedding to capture our love for the ocean and give guests that classic summertime party!

How did you tie that inspiration in to what you choose for your bridesmaid dresses/bridal gown?
My husband, Nate, chose the color for our wedding!  He thought it was obvious that it would be “blue” since the reception was on the water.  I loved that he wanted to add his advice into these often bride-only decisions, so we went with blue (which gave me a lot to work with since there are so many shades of blue) and we added in some splash of teal and hot pink for fun.

What did you choose?
Dessy Collection
What color?
Sailor blue
What were you looking for in your bridesmaid dresses?
Since our wedding was going to be in July I wanted a dress for the girls that was comfortable for that time of year. I wanted the dresses to be affordable since we all have a closet full of old bridesmaid dresses we’ve never worn again! I wanted all the girls to pick their own style dress, keeping it within the same color, in hopes they will wear it again.  They all ended up chosing various styles all in chiffon which I think worked well for the 80 degree day we had and they all looked great!  Flair offered a lot of choices as far as colors, style of dress and prices.
How was Stacey/Lindsay/Brooke most helpful?
Stacey was amazing!  She was more than helpful, offering her honesty, experiences and expertise.  She is enthusiastic, energetic and is genuinely excited for her clients upcoming weddings, which is exactly what a bride is in need of!
What did you choose for your bridal gown?
I went to the Boston’s “Running of the brides” in February.  I went after the hustle and bustle of enery driven brides was over at 6pm. I met my sister and mother there, tried on about 10 gowns and found my dress.  The warnings before going would be there are no changing rooms, so I just wore a bathing suit while trying on the gowns.  There were still hundreds of dresses left that late at night and we were able to skip the craziness that morning!
Tips for brides when selecting their BM dresses?  Bridal Gowns?
I would recommend not bringing your entire bridal party to try on bridesmaid dresses if youre chosing one for all of them. Don’t get me wrong, I know you love everyone in your bridal party, which is why you chose them, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to love everyone’s opinions. That being said I realized everyone has different taste, let them chose their own! Stick with a color or style and let them have some say in where they spend their money!
How was your experience at Flair?
Flair is the cutest little bridal boutique. Its small size makes it intimate for you and your bridesmaids, family, and friends. With having the whole store to yourself during your appointment the store really allows you to play around and have fun…and isn’t that what this is all about?!
Where did you get married??
We got married at St. Theresas Chapel in Humarock, MA, my summer church growing up.  Our reception was at Atlantica Restaurant in Cohasset.
What was your favorite moment at the wedding?
We took pictures before the wedding and we met at Scituate Lighthouse.  Our photographer set Nate up on one side of the lighthouse and I had to walk around til I found him.  Seeing each other on our wedding day for the first time was a feeling I will never forget.  I’ve know him for almost a decade, but for some reason I had butterflies in my stomach looking for him around the lighthouse.  AT the wedding my favorite moment was sitting at our sweetheart table together. Listening to the speeches and LAUGHING.  Looking around and seeing everyone celebrating for you is an overwhelming feeling that I’ll never forget sharing with my new husband.  We couldn’t stop smiling.
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We went to Tahiti and Bora Bora. IT WAS A DREAM

Spotlight on Marcella & Jason’s New York City “Urban” Wedding!

I have been anxiously awaiting writing about this fabulous wedding for months.  This wedding holds a special place in my heart because Marcella really trusted us to help her make her bridesmaids stand out from other bridal parties.  As soon as we spoke to her on the phone we knew this was going to be a wedding we would always remember.  Marcella was a fabulous bride to work with mainly because you could feel the love in the room every time she came in with her bridesmaids and family. Marcella was very excited to help her bridesmaids pick out a dress that fit their personality and made them feel beautiful.  We worked very hard to have the color pallet look city-ish and fun!

What was your inspiration for your wedding?

I grew up in downtown Manhattan and my family still lives there.  I have lived in Boston for 7 years, but I still think of New York City as my original home.  My husband spent a couple crucial years in New York, and he also cares about it.  When we thought about the most significant party we might ever throw, we knew we wanted it to be there.  We chose the Bowery Hotel, which is just a couple blocks from my childhood home, because it feels like Greenwich Village (even though it’s pretty new!) and because I knew I could walk there from my apartment on my wedding day.  Also, just about the best thing in the world is an outdoor terrace on a hot New York City night.

How did you tie that inspiration in to what you choose for your bridesmaid dresses/bridal gown?

I chose shades of gray to harmonize with the city.  I wanted the girls to look as fabulous and individual as they are, so I chose three different shades of gray and each girl chose her own Lynn Lugo style.  The maids of honor and the junior bridesmaid wore lilac so that they would be distinguished, and also because who doesn’t love lilac with gray!  Stacey worked with us on eight different dresses, which was pretty awesome!

What did you choose?
I basically chose colors & fabrics, and the girls did the rest.  The best part was that I think each girl felt glamorous in what she was wearing (or so I hope!).  I wanted to emphasize each person rather than the fact that they were all in my bridal party.  So, we worked on a harmony principle rather than a matching principle and when I looked around on my wedding day, I remember thinking, “Wow, all these beautiful fairies!”
What color?
Charcoal, Blizzard, Smoke, and Thistle – Whoa!  I actually remember!

What were you looking for in your bridesmaid dresses?
At first, honestly, I was looking for a waist.  One of the terrible things about so many bridesmaid dresses is that they are waistless and almost designed to make girls look homely, so that the bride stands out.  I specifically wanted my bridesmaids to look as good as they could possibly look.  The first condition for looking good for most women is a defined waist.  The Lynn Lugo dresses were very flattering and in beautiful colors and fabrics, so they were a good fit all around.
How was Stacey/Lindsay/Brooke most helpful?
Flair is wonderful place to be a bride.  Stacey, Lindsay, and Brooke make the place feel warm and exciting.  They are sensitive, flexible, available, and fun!  I went at least four times with different sets of girls, and every time felt like an occasion.  The first time, when I went with my sister and sister-in-law, Stacey actually put on a Lynn Lugo trunk show, so that we could actually get a stronger feel for the dresses.

What did you choose for your bridal gown?
My bridal gown was Carolina Herrera from a couple years ago.  It was the very first dress I tried on the very first time I even looked for a dress.  It was a very good value.  I got it at an amazing sample sale and then I worked with a wonderful seamstress to make it fit me.  Working on the dress was actually a very fun, much less expensive way to fuss over the dress than shopping for it, which took me about an hour.
Tips for brides when selecting their BM dresses?  Bridal Gowns?
Obviously, the overall feeling of your wedding and the degree of formality come first.  Then, I would say toss all other considerations out, and think about what dresses are going to look good on your ladies.  I think the trend towards color theming of weddings is not that exciting.  A great party is not about a color theme.  It’s about energy.  And, you will have a more energetic party if your gals feel good.  Likewise, I am not sure why every girl needs to wear the same dress.  This is a sure-fire way to make any irregularity stand out.  As for the bridal gown, I feel similarly that you should pick a dress that evokes the formality and setting of the occasion, but that also, in the end, you should pick something that just makes you feel like a million bucks.

How was your experience at Flair?
I had a wonderful experience at Flair.  I had had some pretty deathly experiences at places in New York when I finally decided to do the bridesmaid dresses in Boston.  I was so excited to come to Flair and be greeted by warm, experienced, and attentive professionals whose number one concern was my bridesmaids dresses.
Where did you get married??
The Bowery Hotel, New York City

What three adjectives would best describe your wedding?

Urban, inclusive, FUN!

What was your favorite moment at the wedding?

Toughie.  So many.  Definitely high up was the moment all the girls got into their dresses and I just thought, “How beautiful are my friends!!!”

What advice can you give any other Boston/New England Bride?

Tired but true: try to have fun.  In some ways, the party is everyone’s and the planning is yours.  Ideally, you do this thing only once or twice in your life.  Not many things are like that.  Enjoy!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Greece and Italy.  And, we made a honeymoon registry, which every non-billionaire should do.
