Boston Bridesmaids’ Dresses: Past and Present

At the end of the year, I always find myself getting a little nostalgic and I long for a walk down memory lane. For people of our generation, taking a walk down memory lane often means taking a virtual walk back through old Facebook photos. It always seems like a fun thing to do, but about five minutes in I wonder “why did I decide to do this?!?!” Everyone has some questionable photos they’d like to forget, but my biggest crimes seem to be fashion related. T-shirts with “clever” sayings, super boot cut jeans, chunky heels, oh my! While I cringed at most of my old fashion choices, seeing them also made me feel great about how far I’ve come in the fashion world.

Bridesmaids’ dresses are in the same boat. When I started at Flair over 5 years ago, bridesmaids’ dresses were cute and flattering for sure, but they have come so far since then. Long gone are the days of a simple strapless dress with a tea length, a-line skirt. By the way, no one looks good in tea length. If you do, then you have the body of Giselle, so congrats to you! Anyways, skirt lengths have come up to a more flattering knee length, designers are coming out with unique, striking fabrics and gone are the days of clone bridesmaids in the exact same dresses. Being a bridesmaid today is not the groan worthy task of old. It’s sure to be a fashion event you’ll be happy to look back on in your virtual trips down memory lane!

When you stop into Flair for a visit, ask us nicely and we would be happy to show you some of the “bad” bridesmaids’ dresses of years past. They are sure to make you very appreciative of the fabulous styles of today!

You guys, bridesmaids' dresses used to look like this. Faces have been cropped for obvious reasons.

And now today:

Much better!

Much better!

Can’t wait to help all of you find your perfect, modern dresses!

XO,

Your Flair friends

Making and having a successful bridal/bridesmaid appointments!

Congratulations, your true love has finally popped the question and you said “YES”!  First things first, pick a date and a venue!! Now onto fashion…..what will you wear and what will you choose for your bridal party!

We realize this an extremely exciting time in your life and believe us we are so excited for you and cannot wait to hear about all of your plans and ideas! Here are a few helpful hints before you come in for an appointment to keep in mind!

1. Book your appointment at least 2 weeks in advance!

If you have friends flying in from far off lands, you usually know pretty far in advance……so, as soon as you know, call us!  617.247.2828 We hate turning you away when you have your close friends in town but we are a small store and we need more than 2 days’ notice to book you an appointment especially for a late night or weekend!

2. Come in with some sort of vision!!

Lucky for us, we live in a society that is overloaded with information….sometimes completely over the top at all times.  We have so many ways to find inspiration Pinterest, Bridal Magazines, Blogs, Facebook stalking(we know you do it!), and wedding planners! The problems arise when you come in and give your girls free reign of the entire store and don’t pick any kind of direction.  You are just setting yourself up for disaster and a very disappointing appointment.  Your friends do want to please you and help make your day as wonderful as possible so take this opportunity to at least give them a direction to go in!

3. Bring a select group of friends and family!

If you have been to Flair then you know that we are on the smaller side. If you haven’t, now you know!  We are a small store..…you are probably thinking what does that mean for me? Well, it means bringing the entire bridal party or every aunt and cousin you have doesn’t not really work here! Unfortunately we are a small store and we only have two fitting rooms. On Saturday’s we double book so your large groups will be limited to one fitting room.  So, our suggestion would be to pick your most trusted friends and family to come in and help you with your bridal gown or bridesmaid dress process.  You do want some people to be surprised when they show up at the wedding right?

4. If you made an appointment, keep your appointment or cancel it!

So, you called ahead of time to make a special appointment to come in and look at bridal gowns or bridesmaid dresses! Congrats you were able to schedule the best possible time for you and your friends and your special appointment time rolls around……..and we are patiently waiting for you to arrive to show you all the beautiful gowns/dresses we have when……..we realize you are not coming.

Although I would like to say this happens hardly ever, that is not the case.  Not only does this hurt us as a small business, it hurts our other customers that are on our waitlist hoping for a time to be able to get in and check out bridal gown or bridesmaid dresses with friends and family.  So, if you can’t make it that is fine, just let us know so that we can fill in your time slot with the girls who can make it and are calling us non-stop to see if someone has cancelled.

So, now that you have all our pointers make plans with your girls, call early and get in here!! We are dying to hear about your wedding!!

XOXO

To stalk or not to stalk…

(This picture in no way reflects how Lindsay actually looks/feels)

My wedding is less than a month away and I estimated to my fiancé last night that I am currently 70% crazy. Here’s hoping I make it to July 23rd without reaching a full 100% crazy level. The end of the planning process is the worst part by far. You’re getting so excited for the day to come but you have 1,000,000 little things standing in your way. Gone are the days of fun cake tastings and trying on pretty dresses. Now I’m left with planning the seating chart (ugh), paying final deposits and waiting not so patiently for RSVPs to come back.

Learn from me, Flair friends, and send your invites out as soon as humanly acceptable. Give your guests plenty of time to send their responses, because you know you’re going to have a bunch that push past your deadline. At our deadline we had no less than 20 unanswered RSVPs (a lot considering we only sent a little over 100 invites total). What is wrong with you people?? Don’t you know I’m going crazy enough without having to stalk you for a response? Don’t you know my wedding is going to be ultra fab? Why isn’t your immediate response YES YES and YES?? OK, tirade over.

When the time came to start stalking our respective guests my fiancé was hesitant. “Babe, do we have to?” “Babe, I know ____ is coming without asking.” Sigh, silly boys. It is 100% acceptable to reach out to your guests and ask them for a response. It shows an effort on your part. That way, if they miss the final deadline (i.e. the day you have to send final numbers to your venue) you can atleast say that you reached out and tried. It’s going to be hard to say no to someone who asks to come after that deadline but your hands will be tied and free of guilt. There can be no “Well I misread the date to respond” or any other excuse. We called you, you were slow, so now you have to miss out on the party of the century. OK, I might say it a bit nicer than that, it all depends on my crazy level at the time.

Stay sane summer 2011 brides, our day is almost here!!

XO

Things We Love: Easy DIY projects (no, really!)

We’ve all seen them…those annoyingly perfect, almost completely DIY weddings. I’m sure you, like me, think “how do they have the time and energy to do all of that?!?” My wedding is now just under 6 weeks away (!!) and I can barely handle the tasks I have left to complete let alone think about doing them completely myself, from scratch. Not only that, but does anyone else feel a little subpar when trying anything DIY? Martha Stewart and co. make them look sooo easy and then I attempt them and it takes me an hour to make one favor box, and it’s not a pretty favor box by the end of that hour. As a complete crafts failure, I am here to spill the deets on some seriously easy DIY projects that should save you some time, money and sanity (and who couldn’t use a little more of that!?).

1)      Place cards: When I saw these place cards I almost died. They must be too good to be true! Here’s the scoop: I paid $10 for a gorgeous template that I can type right on and print at home. So, I can choose a fab font that looks pretty without paying a calligrapher and I can print them at home for the price of some cardstock. Genius!! She has different patterns and colors to suit your needs but I chose the below patterns, perfect for my mostly black and white affair.

2)      Shower game: This suggestion is for you, maids. We all know that opening gifts is a necessary part of any bridal shower but let’s face it, it can be uber boring for the guests. Bridal Bingo is the perfect way to keep them interested! You can print the bingo cards at home (see below for an example) and the guests fill in the gifts they think the bride will receive in the blank spots. When she opens said gift, the guest can mark their spot and once someone gets a Bingo a fab prize awaits! The mention of a prize will certainly keep people paying attention to the lovely bride no matter how many gifts she has to open!

OK, I know that my projects all involve the printer but like I said, I am not crafts proficient and this is about all I can handle! Hopefully that’s a good start for you, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more easy projects to make this whole wedding planning process thing a little less stressful!

XOXO

Ladies….it’s time for your wedding, now RELAX!

Wedding season has kicked into high gear and you know what that means….lot’s of weddings will be happening in the coming weeks and months!

Just a few things to  keep in mind as your wedding day approaches!

1. When dresses come in, come get them!  We have a limited space here at Flair and we want you to have your beautiful  dress as long as possible so you have time for tailoring/transporting your dress.

2. Remind your girls that they will have tailoring to be done.  99% of girls that come in need some sort of tailoring.  The size you ordered is the closest to your size, not made to your measurements.

3. Make sure your girls have had dresses steamed or pressed before coming to the wedding unless you have your hotel or venue doing that for you the day before the wedding! We don’t want wrinkly girls walking down the aisle!

4. RELAX……this is supposed to be the happiest time of your life. You have done all the planning and worrying up until this point, let the people around you worry and make all the magic happen. Unfortunately something probably will go wrong on the BIG day but you will probably be the only one to notice it, because everyone else will be noticing you!!

RELAX…..step back and enjoy the best day of your life!

Just chillin…..

“The Skinny” : Flair San Francisco

Dipping our hand into the bridal jar, our SF showroom had our very FIRST trunk show featuring Kirstie Kelly for Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings. The 3-day event was a HUGE HIT!-luring brides over both SF bridges right into our shop! This of course, couldn’t have been done without the lovely, Ilana Izsak. Knowing the collection as if they were her own, Ilana sprinkles the fairy dust in magic. With her “know how’s” and “can do’s” she helped brides find and “make” their perfect wedding gown. No worries! Christine and I took notes! Watch out, brides. Kirstie Kelly’s 2009 bridal collection is sizzling with gorgeous gowns. (I even tried some on and it made me wish I was getting married!!)

Stop in and try on our bridal silhouettes! Flair San Francisco is currently having a special promotion for all bridal orders placed by the end of December 2008. Contact us for more information.
