Bridesmaids’ Dress Trends 2017

From the runways to the wedding aisle!

When New York Fashion Week ended, I went into a slight depression. It was so fun seeing all of those fab, fresh looks (via celebs in my Instagram feed) and learning what hot trends we can expect for this Spring/Summer. Now that it’s over, what am I going to see in my feed now?? Back to shots of my friends’ babies and meals? Boring! OK, just kidding, we love a good baby and/or food photo, but seriously, we need our fashion fix too! Good thing for us, London Fashion Week kept the chic snaps coming! London is such a trendy, fashionable city, and there were inspiring looks all over the place! Here are a few trends we caught that you can totally incorporate into your bridesmaids’ styles:
Red and Yellow – See ya later, muted colors, bold is back in a big way! In particular, reds and yellows have been all over the runways, so why not all over your wedding too? Yellow specifically, though, can be a tricky color on some skin tones, so just be sure to have all of your girls try it on before you commit. Red, on the other hand, has a tendency to read Valentine’s Day and/or Christmas, so be sure to pair it with non-holiday shades to give it a more weddingy (yes, we made up that word) look. Tiffany blue, aubergine, and dove gray are a few favorites that come to mind.

Anna Elyse has one of the largest color palettes we've ever seen; plenty of reds and yellows for you!

Cut outs – OK, we know that cut outs have been around for awhile, but we’re not talking about the typical ones that you’ve seen at the waist. We’re seeing cut outs in whole new places, including the backs of dresses. If you want to show a little skin but still be wedding appropriate, this trend is for you!

Red AND a cool cut out?! This Dessy dress is soooo on trend!

Mixing Prints – Prints have become popular in the bridesmaids’ world over the past year or so, but this year if you really want to step it up, then mix them up! Have your girls wear a few different coordinating prints for a modern, unique look!

We can't think of much chicer than mixing different floral prints. Way to go Jenny Yoo!

Jenny Yoo Bridesmaids’ Dresses

Get to know her innovative Nabi Collection!

The ultimate bridesmaids’ dress struggle: matching dresses or different? These days most brides are opting for the latter, but we’ll be honest, neither choice is without its challenges. Do you spend the time to find that one perfect unicorn of a dress that all of the girls will love, or the time to find multiple dresses for each girl individually? If both options sound a little overwhelming to you, you’ll love Jenny Yoo’s Nabi collection! Each dress in the Nabi collection is convertible, meaning that it can be worn multiple ways. So essentially, you get the best of both the worlds – the ease of choosing just one dress with the peace of mind knowing that each girl can style it to her liking. Genius! Even better, this month all of the Nabi dresses are on SALE! Check out some of the styles below and then give us a ring to make an appointment to see them in person and get your orders in for this fab deal!

Bridesmaids’ Dress Fabrics

The key to comfort!

When shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses, most brides and maids tend to focus on the cut/style of the dress. It makes sense; when you look back at your wedding photos the style of the dress is really what stands out the most. That is, of course, unless your bridesmaids are grimacing because they’re uncomfortable. Then, it will probably be their sour faces that make the biggest impression. To avoid that discomfort, consider the fabric of your bridesmaids’ dresses just as much as their style. No matter how cute the dress, if it’s made of a fabric that itches, pulls, clings, etc., your girls simply won’t look/feel their best. To get you started, here is a brief overview of the major fabrics you’ll likely come across as you shop:

Can't decide on one fabric? You don't have to! Mix and match like these gorgeous models in Jenny Yoo! Oh, and if you like tulle, give us a call because this month her tulle stunners are on sale! Photo credit to Caroline Tran

1) Tulle – Don’t freak out! Tulle gets a bad name from the horrid prom dresses of our past, but in the bridal world, it is the perfect choice for anyone searching for a soft, ethereal, and romantic look! Keep in mind that this fabric is lightweight and breezy, lending it more towards warmer weather weddings. If you want it for your winter wedding then definitely go for it, you just may want to opt for a warm, winter color to counterbalance the light fabric.
2) Raw silk – Sometimes called silk shantung or silk dupioni, this is a great fabric for the bride who just can’t decide. It’s not too heavy or too light, not super expensive, and it generally comes in a ton of colors. See, a real crowd pleaser! One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this fabric does have a unique texture. What may at first glance look like a blemish is actually the raw quality that gives this silk its name.
3) Lace – Somewhat new to the bridesmaids’ world, this fabric is something you’re probably familiar with from looking for your bridal gown. While it can be a little heavy, in a shorter style it still totally works for a Summer wedding. As gorgeous as it is, keep in mind that lace tends to be one of the more expensive fabric options for bridesmaids.
4) Chiffon – This is the most easy-breezy fabric in the bunch. If you’re having your wedding outdoors, prepare for some stunning photos of your girls’ dresses blowing in the breeze. Swoon! Its only downfall is that because of how light and thin it is, you’re going to be more prone to snags when you’re in chiffon.

Still unsure? Give us a buzz to make an appointment; we’ll be happy to go over all of the fabrics with you in person!

Wedding Dress Care

How to combat common day of disasters!

Ready for a hard truth about weddings? Here goes: no matter how much you plan, things may go awry on your wedding day. I have a feeling if you polled past brides, the large majority would be able to tell a tale of some small mishap or another. We don’t say this to scare you, we say it so that you’ll be as prepared as possible and so that you won’t take it too hard if/when your own little oops happens. While we can’t predict what exactly might go wrong, there are certain somewhat common “disasters” that can happen when it comes to your wedding gown, and we’re here today to chat about remedying each!
Rips and tears – As careful as you are, most wedding mornings are a bit of a rush, and that’s when these little blemishes can occur. Be sure to have a sewing kit on hand, and know which of the ladies around you to call upon in your time of need. Not a sewer in the bunch? No worries; fabric glue is another handy item that anyone can use! If you can’t quite fix it all, have a brooch handy that can cover whatever may not be picture perfect.

Speaking of wedding dresses, Jenny Yoo's are on sale this month so we figured this was a good opportunity to show some of them off! Up first is pretty Colette, right on trend with her delicate sleeves!

Stains – There will probably be breakfast and coffee floating around on the morning of your big day, and as hard as you may try, all things dirty seem drawn to that white piece of perfection! You’d be surprised, but a Tide pen and/or the classic club soda can do wonders; just remember to blot, not smear! Also, be sure to use your coordinator as a resource; he/she is likely well versed in the art of stain removal. Again, when all else fails, a well placed sash or brooch can also act as the perfect stain diversion!

Up next is stunning Clara; the perfect mix of a sexy fit and an elegant, timeless fabric!

A stubborn zipper – We always try to warn brides, but a brand new zipper is often a worthy opponent. When you first tried your gown on, it was a sample and the zipper had gone up and down many, many times before. When your brand new gown comes in, it may have only gone up once or twice before, and therefore may be a little stiff. If your wedding day dressers are having trouble, have them rub a bar of soap along the teeth to get it going. Just be sure to use white soap to avoid any potential stainage!

We can't get enough illusion tops, and Claudine has a pretty gorgeous one!

Your fit isn’t perfect – As many tailoring appointments as you may have had, there was likely still several days between your last fitting and the big day, and a few pounds up or down in that amount of time is not unheard of. If your dress is a little loose, have some extra padding (i.e. chicken cutlets) on hand that you can easily and quickly slip into your top. As long as the bust fits well, the rest will fall into place and you won’t be hiking your gown up all night! If your dress feels a tad tight, crank up the AC in the room; a little day of swelling isn’t uncommon, probably because of all of the running around you’ll be doing that morning. If all else fails, carefully wear your dress around for awhile that morning; wearing it should loosen it just enough to get that nice, snug fit you’re going for!

Worried about something happening to your dress on the big day? Be sure to call/email us or ask any questions during your appointment, we’re always here to help 🙂

Bridal Separates

Look tops with a topper!

Over the years we’ve come to find that a bride falling in love with two different wedding dresses is a fairly common occurrence. Generally speaking, brides aren’t often sold on one particular look so she may covet a romantic, timeless gown, for example, just as much as a modern, trendy one. Unless you have a Kardashian budget, you probably won’t opt for actually buying both dress styles, so then begins your very own Sophie’s choice. Which gown to choose?? Lucky for today’s brides, though, there’s a fairly easy way to get two looks out of one dress – toppers! Slip one of these on and totally transform the look of your dress! Whether you’re looking for a little more coverage for the ceremony, or you just want to change up your look mid-day, a topper is an easy and economical way to get the best of both worlds. Did we peak your interest? Here are some terrific toppers by Flair’s fabulous designers!

See what’s trending in her newest collection!

Although we’ve been enjoying nice weather for some time now, this week it finally became official; Summer is here! We love when the seasons change, especially this one. We’re so ready for tanned skin, outdoor cocktails, and, of course, the beach! In our business, though, the calendar seasons aren’t the only ones that change. Most of our designers have seasonal collections that bring us something almost as exciting as a margarita on the beach – new dresses! OK, to us new dresses are actually more exciting than an al fresco cocktail. So, you know it’s a pretty big deal! Speaking of which, we just received some new 2016 Jenny Yoo bridal gowns; perfect timing for our trunk show this weekend! If you’re heading in for the event this weekend, or are just a lover of her looks, here are some trends to look out for in her dreamy, romantic, and ethereal new bridal collection:

Short Wedding Dresses

Short on length, long on style!

I don’t know about you, but this week’s rising temperatures have us stocking up on self tanner and pulling our Spring/Summer clothes out of hibernation. As much as we love them, we’re ready to say au revior to sweaters and scarves and bonjour to sundresses and shorter skirts! Not only does it bring sun and fun, but the warmer weather also signals the beginning of the busy wedding season here in New England. Seeing as how the vast majority of weddings here happen in the hottest months, it makes sense that shorter bridal gowns are getting more and more popular these days! Designers today are creating tons of gorgeous, totally wedding appropriate shorter looks! If you’re thinking of one for your big day, here are some things to consider:

Consider this; Flair has some short cuties from Amy Kuschel, Jenny Yoo and more!

Consider this; Flair has some short cuties from Amy Kuschel, Jenny Yoo and more!

1) One length does not fit all – Wedding dresses don’t just come in two lengths, short and long; there are plenty of choices in between! Just be aware of what length works best on your body type. Generally speaking, knee-length works best on shorter and curvier girls, while taller brides are more apt to pull off a tea length.
2) Remember your venue/theme – Before plunging headfirst into the short dress trend, make sure it fits with your wedding venue and overall theme. As stunning as shorter dresses are these days, they are always going to be a little more casual than their longer counterparts. So, if you’re going for a super formal feel, you might want to think twice about a shorter style (or, get the best of both worlds and opt to just change into one later in the night for dancing!).
3) Understand that your choices will be more limited – Even though more and more designers are creating shorter wedding dresses, they are still in the minority. So, be prepared to have most stores tell you that they only have a few styles to try on. For the less decisive among us, this can be a huge advantage. Less choices means less options to keep you up at night considering!

Once you’ve thought through these points, remember that there are a million great reasons to choose a shorter dress. Most of the time, they are less expensive, they’re often super comfortable, and you can go to the bathroom on your own, just to name a few 🙂

New York Bridal Market

A Trend Report

Let’s face it, all of us girls love shopping. Some of us prefer clothes shopping, while others get a thrill out of home decor. Hey, I’m such a shopping addict that I even enjoy the grocery store! Wherever you shop, I think we can all agree that it’s just nice to treat yourself and discover new things. That’s one of the many reasons that we love New York Bridal Market; we get to shop all of the new bridal collections and bring the gorgeous goodies back to our equally gorgeous Boston brides! Not to mention that we’ll take any excuse to stroll around Manhattan doing our best Carrie Bradshaw walk/run in heels. And getting face time with our kind, talented designers? Always amazing! Having just returned from this year’s Bridal Market, we wanted to pass along a few of the hot, new trends that we spotted. We can’t wait to see them on all of you as the 2016 dresses arrive later this winter!

1) Toppers – Every girl who has been to a bridal shop knows how much a belt/sash can change the look of a gown. It’s amazing how much one accessory can really elevate the look! While belts are here to stay (yay!), there’s a new accessory on the block that is changing the bridal/bridesmaids world – toppers! Slipping one of these tops of over your dress is an easy way to create a unique, modern look and add some coverage at the same time.

2) Crepe – Sure, lace will always be the quintessential bridal fabric, but there’s a new kid in town that’s getting a ton of buzz – crepe. This lightweight material has the structure of a silk with the ease and feel of a comfortable chiffon; a match made in heaven! Tara Keely showed off some chic, clean crepe styles in her new collection; take a peek below!

3) Mixed Materials – Us girls, we always want the best of both worlds. So, when it comes time to purchase our bridal gown, it can be hard to choose. How is one supposed to decide between the timelessness of lace and the comfort of chiffon? Luckily, the new collections have showed us that we don’t have to choose – we really can have it all! Designer Hayley Paige definitely believes in that mentality. Many of her gowns feature multiple fabrics, and the result is truly modern, unique and stunning!

4) Nude – We’re not talking about showing a ton of skin here, but rather changing up the color of your gown. Darker tones were all the rage on the bridal market runways, and for good reason. White can be a tricky color to wear, so switching to a nude or any other darker shade is a good idea for the many of us that can’t quite pull it off.
